George Best Egg

Sarah created the GEORGE BEST EGG in homage to Manchester United and Northern Ireland’s greatest ever football player, and in support of the GEORGE BEST FOUNDATION.
25 November 2006 marked the first anniversary of the death of the legendary footballer, and at the same time Sarah’s creation went on display at the newly named George Best Airport in Belfast.

The GEORGE BEST FOUNDATION provides charitable funds for research into liver disease and alcoholism. So worthy and apposite a cause adds to the joy of creating the GEORGE BEST Egg – a true and enduring celebration of our finest footballer and unforgettable personality.

The finial is created in sterling silver and 24-carat gold – a shamrock, commemorative symbol of George’s Northern Irish birthright. The egg itself is spun in solid sterling, then hand engine-turned and guilloché enamelled in the richest of reds – the most challenging of all colours in the enamellers’ art.
The European Cup medal stands to the front, recording George Best’s part in Manchester United’s greatest European achievement. To the reverse, the football League Champions’ badge. The sides of the Egg are graced with the official crest used by Manchester United in its triumphant year of 1968; and, from the same year, the Northern Ireland official crest.
The lower half of the egg is decorated with the famous Fabergé swags interspersed with ornamental silver and gold footballs, carefully modelled after the footballs of the 60’s. The foot is hand engine-turned in sterling silver and gold.

Open the Egg and, in the tradition of the Fabergé family, view the surprise. On a field of gold and silver, George Best himself is presented, the icon of personality and perfection in football, poised to press forward. A sterling and black gold diamond studded football lies at his feet.
